Loyola DA - "True" Stories From the Desk

I work a job where I sit at a desk and greet people as they enter their residence hall. This typically involves me saying something like "Hello, sir (or madam, which ever applies)" and then swiping their ID. This blog chronicles my job doing this.

Busy Night!

The lobby is going crazy tonight! Theres a great group of guys just hanging out in the lobby. People have been coming in and out the whole night, so I’ve been super busy helping people get into the building. It’s great! I’m so glad I haven’t had anytime to work on my stupid homework! Me and a group of guys in the lobby ordered a pizza pie and what a pie it was! Someone suggested we get mushrooms on it, but I said that was gross. Pepperoni and steak sauce for me! It’s nights like these that make me love being a DA so much!

Menus

A man came in with a delivery tonight and after he dropped the food off he tried to throw out all the menus from a rival restaurant. Well I LET HIM HAVE IT. I explained to him why that was a mean thing to do and he took the menus out of the trash and put them back where they were. He thanked me for being such a good little boy and tried to give me a tip, but I told him we were expressly forbidden from accepting tips. He left with a spring in his step. I’m so glad I work at a job where I can pass on my moral values to people I meet!

Poop

Someone pooped on the desk. Not happy about it.

Moment of Glory

Can’t believe this actually happened, but I had to stop an intruder from getting into the building tonight. This is how it happened (Wow, still can’t believe this!): A student was coming out of the back of the Campion study area and walked right past me and caught the door as someone else let go of it. I springed (I was caught so off guard!) into action and asked for his swipe. He gave (Wow! I stopped an intruder from getting into the building!) me his swipe and I let him into the (Still can’t believe this!) building. I wonder if everyone (I wonder if I’ll get rewarded or something?) knows how close they came to being in serious danger tonight!

Halloween

It’s halloween season here at the desk and let me tell you its been a spooky one so far! I’m in costume (my costume is a desk) and so are all of the students. I saw one student walk by as the killer from “Scream” and one person was dressed up as Bigfoot — super spooky. I brought a bowl of the candy “Runts” for people to take as they walked by. I got so many compliments on my Runts! For example one student said, “Thank you so much for the Runts, man — I’ve been having a rough week with classes and my girlfriend broke up with me and I really sorta just needed some Runts…thanks.” I’m so glad I go to a school where people like Runts as much as I do!

Who is Shorty?!

All these people keep coming through singing these songs about Shorty and I feel like I’m missing something. Does he go to Loyola? Is he really that short? Why do all these Loyola students sing about him? Anyone with any information about Shorty should let me know. I want to learn some songs about Shorty, too!

Thank You!

Wow. It just hit me how much these words can really mean sometimes. I just swiped someone into the building and as he opened the door to walk away, he turned and said, “Thanks, man.” I mean I’m sorta crying right now. I’m so glad that I work at a job where people really appreciate all the great things I do everyday!

Bagel

Brought an everything bagel to my 8-12 today. I thought I’d save it till about 10, but I just couldn’t wait (I had finished it by 8:05)! While I was eating it, a guy came in and said “Hey, now I want an everything bagel!” I shot back “We’ll you can’t have mine!” Great bagel, great shift.

Good Shift Tonight

Man, what a shift I am having so far tonight. I had a nice chat with a student’s mother about how well her daughter was doing in her classes so far (she’s a freshmen, so her mom was pretty nervous about the transition). I told her that classes are hard, but with a little hard work (“elbow grease”) you’ll do just fine in the end. The mother then tried to slip me a dollar bill for being “a nice young man”, but I told her we are expressly forbidden from accepting tips, but thanked her for the sentiment nonetheless. I meet so many nice people every time I work at the desk!
